It makes me very happy to know that this book has been translated into Japanese, and that you, dear reader, are taking the time to read these words and to try to understand Silverlight 2.

I truly believe that we are at the wave of the next generation of the Internet. The first generation was when documents were stored on servers and linked using hyperlinks. This, document-centric web could be seen as being Web 1.0. Next, with the advent of AJAX, it was possible to build applications on the Web, and the application-centric Web 2.0 was born. Now we stand at the beginnings of the experience oriented web. With technologies such as Silverlight, the valuable work of the designer can make it onto a web site without modification, and user-oriented design can take the center stage.

Japan is always a country that has led the world in understanding design, and in driving brilliant user experiences. With Japanese products, the overall experience of using the product is always what impresses me. From simple things such as candies and cakes, and how they are elegantly presented, so that every part of interacting with them (and not just eating them) is enjoyable, to more sophisticated products like electronics and cars, design and user experience are omnipresent. Japanese movies and animation lead the world in their thought-provoking looks at current or future society, and movies such as ‘Ghost in the Shell’, ‘Grave of the Fireflies’ and ‘Evangelion’ are as much immersive experiences as they are story entertainment. I always love visiting Japan, and there’s always something new and wonderful to experience when I come here -- I am sad whenever I have to leave!

With Silverlight, Microsoft have brought forth a technology that hopes to open up the ability of designers, developers and users to come together and build great experiences for the web. It’s a broad technology, giving designers the freedom to explore their vision, developers the power to build on that vision, and users the ease with which they can experience that vision. This book introduces the technology, and will get you started with using it. I hope you have as much fun reading it as I had writing it!
